WSUS Clients Registered But Not Displaying Status when deployed from image

Posted in Windows 2003, Windows 2008 with tags , , on June 26, 2011 by uniekdevries

When you deploy a server from an image or template the WSUS client is not visible in the WSUS Admin Console because of the duplicate WSUS Client ID. The following steps will reset the existing duplicative client IDs:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v AccountDomainSid /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v PingID /f
reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /v SusClientId /f
@echo Triggering detection after resetting WSUS client identity
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

Foldersize: great time saving tool

Posted in Tools with tags , , on June 25, 2011 by uniekdevries

On a regurlarly base it happens that a disk of one of the servers we manage, is for some reason nearly full and needs to be cleaned to free up some space. I always use Foldersize to do a quickscan to find out where the big files are and what causes the problem.

It is a freeware tool; you can download it here:

Foldersize tool

Foldersize visually displays the size of each folder in the form of a bar graph… click a folder bar and it will drill down and show sizes of folders within. Its a super quick, no fuss application that just get you the information you want.

Netbackup client not being backuped because of exceeding backup window

Posted in Netbackup with tags , on June 25, 2011 by uniekdevries

When you add a Netbackup client to a Netbackup policy be aware of the fact thas this not always means the server will be backuped. The reason for that is that the backupwindow might have been closed before all the clients have been backuped. The policy does not keep a record what clients didn’t get backuped during the last backupsession.
When the backupwindow reopens, the policy begins to backup client A instead of the client where he left of. Therefore make sure that the backup window matches the the total number of clients in the policy.

How to change the service account for the Vmware Vsphere Virtualcenter server

Posted in vmware with tags , , on June 24, 2011 by uniekdevries

When you want to change the Service Account for running the Vsphere Vitualcenter server services, you have to do following:
Create a domain user account add it to local administrator group of the Virtualcenter server.
The next thing is to create a login for the Service Account on the SQL server that is hosting the database and give the user dbo_owner permission on the vmware vsphere database. The thirth step is to create a ODBC connection to the database. Therefore you have to log on under the system account and start the ODBC Administrator. When there is already a System DSN and the authentication settings are set to Windows Authentication then you can skip this step.
Once the ODBC connection is established you can stop the services, change the Service Account settings and restart the services again. You may get the message that the service account has been granted the “Logon as a service” right. When the action completed succesfully, you should see the following:

Citrix Access Management console keeps loading when launched

Posted in Citrix, XenApp with tags , , on June 24, 2011 by uniekdevries

Before you start the Citrix XenApp Access Management Console you have to configure the proxyserver first. Otherwise the Access Management Console keeps loading when you start the application. It has something to do with checking the certificate CRL. You could also disable CRL checking in Internet Explorer.

Citrix Webinterface 5.4 does not work in a frame.

Posted in Citrix, XenApp with tags , , , on June 24, 2011 by uniekdevries

When you have installed the Citrix Webinterface 5.4 and you have integrated it as a frame in a website, you get an error (“Resource shortcuts are currently disabled.”) when you start a Published Desktop. When you launch the same application from a site without frames (“full screen”) it starts without any error. Research learned that the solution in this discussion might solve the problem.

I tested the solution but it didn’t work for me. I must admit that i didn’t reregistered the dll’s so maybe that is an additional step in the described solution. To workarround the problem we redesigned our front webportal.

Citrix Shadowing does not work when started as published Application

Posted in Citrix, XenApp on June 24, 2011 by uniekdevries

When you start the Citrix Xenapp shadowing tool as a published application, and selected a user to shadow, you might see the following error:

Citrix XenApp Shadowing

“Cannot connect to the citrix XenApp server. The Server (Unknown) is not trusted for ICA connections. Connections to the (All Regions) Region are not allowed by lockdown setting”.

This can be resolved to add the following key to your XenApp profile.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\ICA Client\Engine\Lockdown Profiles\All Regions]
“Version Minimum”=dword:00002710
“Version Maximum”=dword:00002774

I read in several posts that is OK if you add it to your Windows profile but that isn’t correct (in our environment). You have to add it in the XenApp profile. In the end you connect with your citrix session to another citrix session. Your normal Windows profile is not involved in my opnion.
